MITIE’s Asset Management division have developed and now operates an off-grid, combined heat and power energy centre for the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust, a 900-bed hospital within the London Borough of Camden. A unique partnership has been created between the NHS Trust, MITIE and Camden Council to provide and distribute the surplus heat to Camden Council tenants. This is the first public and private sector partnership of its kind aimed at alleviating fuel poverty.
The surplus energy from the Royal Free energy centre will provide cheaper heating and hot water for up to 1,500 council tenants. Camden Council estimates that its carbon footprint will be reduced by 2,800 tonnes each year – the equivalent of insulating 4,000 typical semi-detached homes.
MITIE awarded Forward Industrial Utilities the contract to install its Powerpipe product throughout the project. This was a challenging project requiring the installation to be completed to tight deadlines thoughout a thriving business and residential community in the middle of London.
Health and Safety factors were paramount throughout this project not just to protect the many workers involved, but to ensure that the local community were kept safe from the on going work. As a result spot checks and on-going training were operational throughout the duration of the project.
Forward Industrial Utilities are one of the few companies in the UK able to provide the pipework required for district heat networks. Powerpipe is a proven product which has been utilised in many projects across the globe. Forward’s fully trained, highly experienced installation team ensure that projects like this are carried out effectively and efficiently.
